If there is a complaint that tends to come up during the discussion of the The Legend of Zelda franchise is that Nintendo chooses to forgo a modern aesthetic in favor of a more stylized look. Certainly it helps to keep Zelda timeless and not as dated to the final product as a game with more traditional visuals, but it also leaves fans wondering what games might look like on modern graphics engines.

Well don’t ask me like a anymore Zelda fan took it upon himself to recreate Kokiri Forest from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time using Unreal Engine 4. Although Nintendo may never choose to provide a Zelda A game with a modern aesthetic, this Unreal Engine fan project shows just how amazing the game could be.

Players interested in checking out Ocarina of time in Unreal Engine 4 can download the file here. The demo is admittedly limited in scope, but it does showcase some of the iconic moments from the Kokiri Forest section. Players can smash a few pots to collect rubies, explore Kokiri houses, try to avoid Navi’s harassment, and even pass by the Kokiri child who is blocking the way out of the forest. Players can also open the menu screen, but not much seems to be happening there.

Granted, the animation and design are a bit rough, but even so, Ocarina of time is beautiful on Unreal Engine 4. The detail of the characters and the classic Zelda items like rubies and jars in true HD will certainly have fans dreaming for a future, as the franchise moves on to Unreal Engine.

At one point, it was believed that Nintendo could go completely modern when the studio revealed a CGI video featuring Link and Ganon fighting each other, but it turned out to be a bait and a switch. Instead, players were treated to Wind waker, which, while visually stunning, was very stylized.

But Nintendo seems more interested in delivering games that don’t push the boundaries of visual fidelity, but instead feature unique and somewhat timeless art styles. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, for example, don’t try to compete with a game like Horizon: Zero Dawn, but it has some awesome visuals on its own.
