The Winds of Time is a mod concept that combines the beauty of Wind Waker with the gameplay of Ocarina of Time.

The Legend of Zelda turns 35 this year. It is therefore normal that a new mod has appeared in the community. Fans are eagerly waiting until more Breath of the Wild 2 news emerges, but this mod will have them revert to two classics to help the long wait pass a bit faster. If it ever happens, it is.

Modder BigSharkZ has created a demo video titled The Legend of Zelda: Winds of Time, which combines the cartoonish aesthetic of Wind Waker with the gameplay of Ocarina of Time. The Zelda community took a while to prepare for the 2002 Wind Waker due to its design change, but most appreciated its timeless look.

After the release of Link’s Awakening in 2019, however, we thought the kawaii coat was moving to the Switch title due to its chibi aesthetic. BigSharkZ’s idea of combining Ocarina of Time’s timeless gameplay with Wind Waker’s visual style has become a much-requested mod, even though its creation started out as a joke.

The Winds of Time trailer was originally released as an April Fool’s Day gag, but its combination of the two games has resulted in demand for more. The modder took two weeks to create the trailer, featuring various scenes with Link, Malon, and even a few Cuccos. Winds of Time even featured a portion of the gameplay where the modder took on the role of “toon” Malon, alongside other extras as the trailer continued.

After the modder confirmed that this was an April Fool’s Day joke, the YouTube post was inundated with comments from fans stating that they would pay dearly for a working mod. BigSharkZ then confirmed that a Winds of Time mod pack would be available “someday”, highlighting the amount of work to be undertaken for one person.

Ocarina of Time is still the favorite of many in the Zelda series, and her infamous Water Temple has even been called the most difficult puzzle of all time. While its original gameplay and design is popular with the fandom, most fans welcome a mod or two that accentuate its basics and draw on more archaic aspects.

Many Breath of the Wild fans still roam the open world of Hyrule before his successor appears, and one player has even discovered an Easter Egg that connects him to Wind Waker. The YouTuber noticed that a hut in the village of Lurelin resembled the one on Wind Waker’s Outset Island, leading many to believe that the two games are related.
