Skyrim mod mixes Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Elder Scrolls

Relics of Hyrule is a huge user-friendly mod for Skyrim that asks players to uncover the fate of the Forgotten Realm of Hyrule.

Long after its release, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s The incredibly active modding community continues to deliver fresh and new experiences. Mods keep getting bigger and more ambitious, especially when it comes to those that aim to bring content from other games. This is the case with Relics of Hyrule, an incredibly creative mod that aims to bring various items of THE Legend of Zelda series at Skyrim, while remaining respectful of traditions.

Without going into spoils, Relics of Hyrule explores the concept that the lands of Skyrim and Hyrule are somehow connected. Much of the history of the mod is open to interpretation and intentionally remains quite vague. Players will find out early on that Hyrule has been attacked by Alduin and the Hero of Time. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time couldn’t defeat him. The Hero of Time is one of the four main characters who convey the story to the player via books scattered around Skyrim.

It was also pointed out early enough that there was no real way to save Hyrule. It’s pretty obvious that Hyrule has been destroyed and the best the Dragonborn can do is avenge Hyrule by defeating Alduin. Death is the major theme of Relics of Hyruleand this is something that most books and journals will explore, giving several different perspectives and interpretations.

The mod adds a ton of unique locations and dungeons designed to look like Hyrule’s. Custom Dungeons are a refreshing change from Skyrimby default because they take a lot of design notes from Zeldathe dungeons. There are lots of secrets in Relics of Hyruledungeons, many of which involve puzzles to uncover more loot and rewards. Progress in dungeons is also similar, as players will need to use boss keys to progress deeper into bosses.

Relics of Hyrulethe dungeons to find a happy medium between Skyrim and Zelda’s gameplay, feel right at home with both styles of play in mind. The same goes for the Relics of Hyrule that players will discover, although many of them have had their mechanics changed to work in Skyrim. Still, items like the Master Sword and the Ocarina of Time are easily recognizable and comparable to their Zelda equivalent.

These items can appear in locations added by the mod or in base game locations. There are no quest lines that will guide players to these, although there are plenty of ways the mod still guides players to its content. For example, a chest in Riverwood will give players the first of many Forgotten Notes that will briefly point out some of the main locations in the game.

A forgotten note from the Elder Scrols 5 Skyrim mod, Relics of Hyrule

Apart from the forgotten notes, fairies of different colors will appear next to the slots containing items of Relics of Hyrule. If players want to focus on finding everything the mod has to offer, they can easily find out where the changed content is and other secrets. There are also several items that help guide players to certain locations, although they will need to find them on their own first.

While players shouldn’t expect to see characters from the Zelda series appear physically in the game, many enemies of the games populate the dungeons. Most of these enemies act as variants of Skyrim enemies like Draugr and Daedra. There are some who have unique abilities to make them a bit more specific to their Zelda versions, such as the Draugr-like Redeads having a crippling scream.

Zelda Fans should find a lot of fun in this mod, as it does an amazing job of mixing the worlds of Skyrim and Hyrule together while staying true to the lore of the two. It does not infringe on a normal Skyrim playthrough either, easily interweaving with base game locations. In many ways, Relics of Hyrule is an expertly crafted mod that is underrated by critics when it comes to Skyrim mods. Zelda fans should absolutely donate Relics of Hyrule A try.
